Millersylvania State Park, Washington

Deep LakeJuly 5-8, 2012

This was a four-day reunion for the Hill-Meyer family. Kate and I brought Jesse with us, and Tobi drove down from her home in Seattle. This was the first time we had spent a stretch of time together, just the four of us, in years, and it was a wonderful reconnection.

We chose Millersylvania because it's just a few miles off Interstate 5 south of Olympia. The campground itself was large and very active, but we had a big site to spread out in (#35).

The weather was perfect: warm enough for splashing around in the lake during the day and cool enough for a campfire at night. The lake was a short drive or hike from the camp-ground, but we blew up both the canoe and kayak and had fun paddling around, sun-napping, and playing bumper boats.

An unexpected treat was a wolf sanctuary that we saw signs for. It was just a few miles down the road from the campground, and on Saturday morning we went for a tour. The place is called Wolf Haven International, and it's a well-run place. They offer sanctuary to rescued captive-bred wolves and to endangered wolves in federal wolf recovery programs.

Our long weekend flew by, and it brought back so many years of roasting marshmallows and campfire chat. Camping was a regular summer activity for our family, since Jesse was young enough to scoot around in the mud, and it was wonderful to spend this time together again. We hope to make it an annual tradition!
