Earthship Village, New Mexico
What are earthships? We wondered ourselves when we drove by these unique desert structures and a sign welcoming us to visit.
Earthships, as it turns out, are sustainable structures built with indigenous and recycled materials. Whole communities of earthships have cropped up around the world, housing independent communities. This one, Earthship Biotecture, offers worldwide training to help build affordable, self-sufficient housing.
The major portion of the buildings are underground, and much recycled material is used. This structure used concrete and aluminum cans. Others used tires and dirt, or glass bottles.
It was all very intriguing and mysterious. We walked all around the property taking pictures, but we never saw a soul -- even through there were several vehicles there.
We could only guess that everybody was underground!
